Listening to a Spoken Word Poem

SPOKEN WORD

Spoken Word poetry is one of the most immediate, creative, moving and democratic art forms going. When done well, there’s nothing like it. Even nervous beginners are sharing something amazing, if not polished, with their audience. Seeing people bravely stand up, with just a mic and perform their own writing is really something. Many of these amazing performances have been captured and can be found on YouTube (although if you get a chance to go to a live performance, we highly recommend too).

It’s not poetry as many people recall from school, Spoken Word is varied and dynamic, it can be funny, moving, political, silly, sexy and sometimes many things at once. We’ll share some to start you off, but you may find you go looking for more, or even get the bug to try it out. If so a great London/Brighton based night which has an Open Mic segment is Come Rhyme With Me, we can’t recommend it highly enough.
